Installing TeamViewer for Windows

TeamViewer will allow One Click Wonders to connect to your PC to resolve many potential problems without coming to your home. The connection is secure and password-protected (with a new, unique password that only you will know each time it is used). The only caveat is that the PC must be connected to the Internet. The software is free for you to download and install. One Click Wonders has paid a substantial annual license fee to permit us to use TeamViewer for your support. We would welcome a donation to offset the cost but it is not a condition of support.

Downloading and installing it is like any other software on the Internet:

  • Start by launching your favorite web browser in Windows 7 or Windows 10. These instructions were built using Window7 but Windows 10 is almost identical in its handling of this project. I'm using Chrome for these instructions, but Firefox or Edge will work just as well (I don't recommend continued use of Internet Explorer for anything these days). Enter the URL address http://www.teamviewer.com into the address bar of the browser and press [return] or [enter] on your keyboard.

  • You will arrive at the TeamViewer download page. Accept any requests for cookies or other conditions to view the page. Scroll down to a prominent green button marked "Download for free" (I've added a red arrow to point it out here) and click it once. This will begin the download to your "Downloads" folder on your computer.

You will see the download progress in a small window at the lower, lefthand side of the Chrome main window. When it is complete, the window will display like this. Click on the little 'up' icon (^) and select "Show in folder".

  • In your Downloads folder, double-click the "TeamViewer_Setup" icon twice to launch the installer.

  • Windows confirm that you want to run the file. It looks like this in Windows 7 and, while it looks different in Windows 10, the correct response is to click the "Run" button.

  • You will be asked what kind of installation you desire. Select "Default installation" and "Personal/Non-commercial use. Then click the "Accept - finish" button

  • Windows User Access Control will ask permission to install the program (again, this may look a little different in Windows 10 but the intent is the same). Click "Yes".

  • A succession of progress bars will report installation steps being taken. At the end, you may get a "What's new" page. You may safely [X] out of it.

  • Another window regarding licensing changes may also appear. If so, just click the "Do not show this message again" item.

  • The TeamViewer interface will now open and you are ready for remote support! You will need to call Dave at 864.710.7009 and give me both "Your ID" and "Password" under "Allow Remote Control". That password expires after each session and a new one is generated for later sessions, so your computer is complete locked down from external access after the session ends.

And that's it. I know there are a lot of steps, but if you print out these instructions, they should be fairly easy to follow. And you can always call me if you get stuck!
